An important variable when judging if something is empowering or not is that outsiders can never be the judge of someone else’s emotions on whether or not something is empowering.

However, I do think that there is a difference between systemic/overall categorization versus individual categorization. Because as an industry porn exists off of the subordination of women I think it can not be an empowering industry.

I think that we have a hard time constructing sex work as empowering because it involves men. Think critically, do you think people would have such a hard time seeing sex work as empowering if women were having sex with other women for money?

I believe that a woman having the ability to choose sex work as her occupation is liberating. A woman has the right to chose what happens to her body, if she wants to be a prostitute, she should be able to. (Of course, this is more complicated when considering the availability of OTHER options for women)

Another aspect of this question is where to place women who are making porn that does not adhere to the traditional standards of porn. Erika Lust for example aims to make ethical and diverse adult content through her company XConfessions. Where do we place projects like this on the scale of liberation? Is “by us for us” and easy cop out or an actual effective alternative to the current porn industry?
