Social Media Challenges

One of the most common ways that people are connecting over music is by sharing it on social media. Different types of music challenges have become popular during quarantine as people feel compelled to share the music they are listening to. These challenges are a fun way for people to share their music taste as well as discover new music that their friends are listening to. This creates unity and connection between people as they share their favorite songs and artists.

The 30 Day Music Challenge

The 30 Day Music Challenge is a common trend on Instagram. Each day, the person shares a different kind of song according to a chart that they screenshot. For example, Day 1 could be “A song you you like with a color in the title,” and someone might post “Yellow Submarine.” Many people choose to share their music selections of their Instagram Stories so that people can listen to the songs as they click through the stories in their feed. The challenge lasts for 30 days, so this also gives people an extended opportunity to continuously post content and connect with people rather than just posting once. This challenge lets people share different kinds of music while they are home in quarantine.

The Bill Clinton Album Cover Challenge

There is an image of Bill Clinton sitting on the floor surrounded by 4 different records. This challenges asks participants to edit their top 4 favorite albums onto the image and nominate a few friends to do the same. These posts allow people to share the music of some of their favorite artists as well as include their family and friends. Challenges like these make people feel more connected; not only can people share their own music taste, but  they can also nominate their friends to share their music as well.

The Facebook Album Challenge

The Facebook Album Challenge gives people an opportunity to share the music that has most influenced their music taste. For 10 days, the participants share one album that was very influential for them, and they nominate one person to participate each day. 10 days, 10 albums, 10 nominations. The posts do not include explanations for why a person chose that album; participants simply post photos of an influential album and nominate a friend to participate. Music can be very important to people; sometimes music is therapeutic. It can describe feelings that people cannot put into words. This challenge allows people to share the music that is the most important to them and that shaped their music taste. People also have the opportunity to include their friends and family in the challenge, allowing them to connect through music.
