Abstract

This case study examines school closures in the School District of Philadelphia from years 2012-2014 while also highlighting the causes and effects of the closures. Additionally, my case study includes the work that organizers are doing within Philadelphia to combat future school closures. The grassroots organization that I am focusing on is Youth United for Change. Furthermore, my case study highlights the causes and effects of the closures. I have pinpointed the opening of charter schools within those same affected communities as one primary outcome of the school closures. In addition, the research provided here goes into depth on the metrics and frameworks present in the decision-making process to close public schools during that time, such as budget deficits, low attendance and academic performance, and underutilization.
