Welcome, welcome!

My case study covers the recent organizing and resistance against the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) in Trinidad. While Barbados became the first Caribbean country to abolish the exam in 2019, Trinidad has refused its abolition. Before both decisions, the SEA has undergone criticism from Trinidadians, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students, parents, several politicians, and community members have vocalized abolition of the SEA. However, Trinidad’s Ministry of Education and the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) have called for the exam’s reform rather than its abolition. While reflecting on Seattle’s 2015 boycott on the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test and the principles of social justice unionism, I offer potential suggestions for the future of organizing towards the SEA’s ultimate abolition.
