Organizing Strategies

Centering Black leadership and increasing racial equity are at the core of BMORE’s organizing priorities. When initially building power, BMORE was cautious of the role that liberal white educators would have as whiteness often centers on the white experience. As a grassroots organization, BMORE prioritizes the recruitment and retainment of Black teachers through relationship building between schools and teachers to create unity within the system. For example, national news in 2018 focused on Baltimore students and teachers who were caught in freezing classrooms – BMORE organized by sending a list of demands to the district administration, with signatures from over 1500 supporters throughout the county (Cohen, 2019). After finding success, BMORE also worked with districts throughout Maryland to implement a Black Lives Matter Week, demanding a move away from the white centric curriculum and the amplification of Black voices and leadership. (Cohen, 2019). After gaining widespread organizing success at the grassroots level, BMORE moved to running candidates at the leadership level so that they could implement a more equitable system from all angles. (Cohen, 2019). BMORE is a grassroots organization and has looked to combat systemic racism through organization at every level.
