Discussion

As noted by the many NYC immigrant communities who have banded together, NYC failed to provide them positive social and policy change to better aid their lives. They teach one another about each other’s culture and perspective. Still, at the same time, they educate each other on the knowledge they’ve accumulated collectively, as well as teaching themselves what they can demand from their government as a community. Unknowingly they deploy a Frerian approach to organizing as they build the grassroots organization, DRUM. Within their new organization, they have prioritized educating and empowering their members to use their voice to vocalize the problems their communities have struggled the most with. They share these organizing experiences, and in turn, they can continue increasing their resources and knowledge as a collective. Simultaneously, DRUM has shown similarities to the same organizing approach that Ella Baker has committed to. The education collaborative that DRUM joined to better address educational inequities facing ELL students is a prime example. Bounded by the same dilemma within their own communities, we watch as multiple nonprofit and grassroots organizations join together to advocate for their ELL students, as they find power in numbers.
