I will be focusing on the Philadelphia Student Union (PSU), an organization that centers students’ voices in conversations about education justice and anti-racism. PSU has multiple goals related to educational equity, but its social media channels have been primarily focused on the movement for police-free schools since George Floyd’s murder and on COVID-19 safety since discussions began about whether the School District of Philadelphia would open for in-person instruction in the fall of 2020. With Black people disproportionately likely to be victims of police brutality and all racial and ethnic minorities at increased risk for serious illness and death as a result of COVID-19, these issues are both key components of racial justice work in 2020.
