CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The framework that places like Chicago are working to instill, to change the educational injustices that plague their cities stem from a process known as social justice unionism, where people stand in solidarity for one worthy cause (Weiner 2012). The social justice unionism taking place in Chicago is due to the unfair benefits that wealthier students receive, and the obvious disregard to match these opportunities for the large numbers of students in poverty and less wealthy areas. As so many kids have been excluded from receiving a positive education, teacher unions are working to resist the “free market” education, as this increases inequalities among students, due to the economy still owning the public education system (Weiner 2012). These teachers unions’ goal is working to bring in the voices of multiple members of the community rather than letting the elites hold all of the power. The act of social justice unionism prides itself on instilling strength throughout members of the unions emphasizing the importance in organizational processes to make real change in society (Weiner 2012). Through acts of participatory democratic organizing where parents, and local community members are willing to get involved within these teachers unions, there can be real change made to the pandemic of public education. These unions have an important role in fighting for the foundation of the public education system as it has consistently failed so many students, especially those in Chicago, Illinois (Weiner 2012).
