DISCUSSION

The Chicago Teachers Union has worked directly to organize against housing injustices, as this correlates to the success of schools and communities. In Chicago there are thousands of students living in temporary situations, including cars and motels, as the schools do not have adequate resources to help these families and students in need (CTU Housing Committee 2019). Through a legally binding contract, CTU has made proposals for the CPS that advocates for affordable housing, more financial aid opportunities, and hiring support staff to help those in need (CTU Housing Committee 2019). The Social Justice Union continues its fight in support of students and families demands for an increase in racial diversity among teachers, providing an adequate education, eliminating police while increasing support staff, and addressing affordable housing acts, and ensuring policies to help homeless students (CTU Housing Committee 2019). Through the Chicago Teachers Union partnering with local parents, students, and community organizers, the act of participatory democratic organizing is very relevant. The CTU provides many ways to get involved within the social union through providing a framework that allows many individuals to contribute and be involved through petitions, strikes, donations, and small leadership opportunities such as directly talking to local schools and committees. The participatory democratic organization of the union, provides the strength found within as each member truly believes in the work they are doing to fix the educational system in Chicago. This work directly aligns with the social justice unionism framework of the National Coalition of Education Activists  through ending the acceptance of oppression and raising parents and local community members voices. The emphasis on a partnership between community allies is key in working towards the unions that will foster a greater education system for all students (NCEA 2020). This social justice union requires participation of people ranking from local to national levels to highlight the importance of gaining the educational equality that all students deserve (NCEA 2020).
