Conceptual Framework

RORE, an organization led by educators takes on the organizing approach mentioned by Ella Baker, referred to as group-centered leadership. Baker defined it as, “This pattern of leadership emphasized the role of the leader as a facilitator, as someone who brings out the potential in others, rather than a person who commands respect and a following as a result of charisma or status”. Rank and File educators in the title of RORE puts emphasis on the fact that the organization is led by educators that are not in positions of authority. Ella Baker mentioned how giving power to one specific leader can take away from listening to others with different ideas. Baker believes that the work of organizers should be representative of people that they are serving. Clearly, through RORE’s work, it can be seen that they care about the community in which they work. RORE does not only advocate for issues that pertain to their own work, they also support other issues that arise in their community. On their facebook page, RORE is constantly reposting and supporting other causes. Ella Baker emphasizes that the most important part of an organization is to put the community first rather than the leader, and RORE’s work mirrors that idea.

RORE’s values also align with social justice unionism. Social justice unionism goes along with the idea that the issues should not just be about the members of the caucus, but also of others. In an article by Rethinking schools, the authors wrote, “Defend the rights of its members while fighting for the rights and needs of the broader community and students”. RORE is keen on advocating for their community members, especially in times like these where families are going through tough financial situations. RORE leaders acknowledge that educational issues stem from the community, and they address it as best as they can.
