Organizing Strategies

RORE, centered in Rochester, New York has been at the forefront of opposing reopening of schools. RORE educators were protesting in the beginning of the school year, with hopes that the government would provide safer measures while starting schools or keep students remote. In August of 2020, New York teachers took to the streets to protest the reopening of schools. Stix wrote, “As part of the protest, teachers held signs criticizing the Department of Education, carried mock caskets, guillotines and skeletons and chanted against the plans.” Teachers are taking the health and safety of students more seriously than the in person learning component. Teachers in Rochester came up with a survey to define the needs of teachers during the pandemic. Sapere wrote, “RORE’s current list of demands continues and include free high-speed internet for all students and families, a reallocation of $16 million planned for a new police station (read the room, Rochester) to our Rochester families”. Educators want to ensure safety for their students, but also try to provide equitable access, so that each student can get the chance to apply themselves in the classroom. Currently as of september 2020, RORE’s efforts have been recognized and ultimately government officials have decided to continue remote learning for the first semester of school. Although this is a big achievement for RORE, they still feel as if there is a lot more work to be done. RORE is now focusing on facing the inequalities of online education, such as access to the internet and catering to their vulnerable student population.
