Problem

The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting schools disproportionately; Government officials are asking for schools to resume in person classes, while educators and schools feel as if they are not prepared to continue with in person learning. Proper measures were not taken in the Spring of 2020, causing many students to fall behind in schools. Journalist, Julie Donohue explained, “Education leaders at the state and local levels will likely have to make key instructional decisions regarding what material to cover in the 2020–2021 school year.” Not only do teachers need to worry about repoing amidst a pandemic, they also need to change their teaching plans to make sure their students are getting the best education possible.

Underfunded communities, especially in urban areas, tend to have less resources for COVID, but still are heading back to in person classes. Teachers are fighting back to only go back to teaching when it is safe to do so. Although government officials are pushing for in person learning, many scientists and the CDC are highly against it. Educators are highly upset because they are being put in an unsafe environment, and they worry for their students’ futures.
