RORE (Rochester Organization of Rank and File Educators)

RORE is composed of educators in the Rochester, New York area. The initiative of RORE is to provide equitable learning opportunities for their students, and fair educator regulations for their teachers. The district and state have been making budget cuts and other decisions that affect students and educators immensely. During theCOVID-19 pandemic, RORE educators took to the streets to protest reopening. RORE continues their fight for their students in the pandemic, by launching a petition to provide unlimited internet access to all their students who are remotely learning. The devices given to students only allows them to use 10GB of data per month, which in RORE educators opinions is nowhere near enough for the semester. RORE stated, “How can we pretend that the district is providing equitable access to remote education? The average student in the RCSD is on Zoom OR their Chromebook for 5-6 hours a day. The mifi would therefore only get them through 2 days of remote learning” (RORE Facebook page). RORE not only is advocating for the safety of their students, but they want to make sure that their students get equitable access to learning. Although the school district distributed computers to students, there is no use for them if they can not access the internet to attend class. RORE is pointing out the blatant classism that the Rochester Public School district chooses to ignore. RORE still faces many obstacles with the state and district threatening to make budget cuts and lay off employees, but RORE continues to organize through protests and petitions against issues that affect them or their students.
