La conjonction  « si » introduit des phrases hypothétiques qui posent souvent un problème à cause des différents types de modes et temps verbaux utilisés en anglais et en français. La traduction en anglais est “if”.

Hypothèse probable: SI + présent <=> futur / impératif
S’il me répond, je saurai qu’il pense à moi = If he answers I will know he is thinking about me
Si tu veux réussir cet examen, étudie! = If you want to pass this exam, study!

Hypothèse improbable: SI + imparfait <=>  conditionnel présent
Si j’écrivais de beaux poèmes, je te le dirais. = If I was writing beautiful poems,  I would tell you.

Hypothèse impossibles (refer to the past): SI + plus que parfait <=> conditionnel passé
Si j’avais étudié tout le week-end, j’aurais sûrement fait une meilleure note. = If I had studied the whole week-end, I would have gotten a better grade.
