  1. This portrait was definitely a love-hate project. I felt like all the individual features themselves were good and I was proud of them as a result, but I don’t like the way it all came together. I am definitely a perfectionist, which is why I don’t love doing portraits in general because it is so easy to mess them up with even the slightest errors. I think in this particular project I made the eyes too big (again), which definitely gives it an unrealistic appearance. I also think I may have exaggerated the wrinkles a little bit too much around the eyes as well because I don’t know if it’s just me that thinks this but my mom looks way older in my version than in the picture. I also am unsure about the hair. I think I got the volume down and the different shadows, but I am unsure if I gave it enough texture. I didn’t want to overdue it and end up with spaghetti hair, so I definitely played it safe and I’m conflicted on whether that was the right decision. I also could not get the nose from the straight on angle, no matter how many times I tried, so I tilted it to the side a little bit because I find that easier to draw. Overall, there are aspects of this pieces I really like and I am really proud of but I do think more practice with portraits, in particular with the proportions, could be beneficial.
