I just threw a border on this in order to assess the composition better.

I think this was the perfect way to end this semester. Throughout the process of putting this drawing together I got to practice skills from every stage of this class: drawing contours, paying attention to negative spaces, making a good schematic, and refining values. I’m really happy with the result. I went into this portrait with the goal of a more distorted, caricature-type drawing in terms of the facial features, but as I worked on my schematic it ended up being much more true to life, so I stayed on that path instead. The hardest part was probably knowing when to stop. As it is, I like the half-finished look of the hair, I think the omission of value actually gives the portrait more character. My one concern with this is that some of the shading on the face appears too flat– I could’ve paid closer attention to the wireframe of the face in order to make the shading truer to real life dimensions.
